An important break

6 October 2015

Carlos Carvalhal believes the international break has come at a good period in the Owls’ campaign.

While many in the game welcome fixtures coming thick and fast during spells of good form, the Owls' head coach believes plenty can be achieved in the coming break.

After four straight wins in all competitions, Wednesday will be back in action against Hull City on Saturday week and in the meantime, there is plenty for the Owls to do on the training pitch.

Carlos explained: “Now we can recover the players, train the players and charge the batteries.

“I think we can do a lot of things in these two weeks. Usually a break is not good for the coaches when the team is winning but for me, this break will be very good for us.

“With the sequence of games that we have had, the players have run a lot of kilometres, this is normal after four or five games. We have won those games and now we have the break.

“We have time to relax some players, increase the tempo of other players and at same time we have time for training and to improve.”

Reflecting on Saturday’s win over Preston, and in particular Lewis McGugan’s stunning goal from range, Carvalhal added:

“It was a fantastic goal from Lewis, it’s probably just Lewis on the pitch that can do this type of goal.

“With the technical quality that he has, he did a fantastic goal and it was only at that moment, we felt we won the game.

“This was a crucial match to me, we won an important match with Fulham, then again at St James’ Park and then away from our home at Brentford.

“After this we played Preston and everyone expected we would win the game, this is natural. But that is when surprises happen so it was crucial that we kept our levels up and won the game.

“I’m a very happy coach right now.”
