Newcastle left back Massadio Haidara insists his side must advance in the Capital One Cup this week in order to relieve the pressure at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have won just one game this season which came in the previous round against Northampton.

As their search for a Premier League victory continues, Haidara says a run the Capital One Cup will boost confidence.

“We need a win to relieve the pressure,” Haidara said.

“I am excited by the cups. You can win five games and be in the final.

"There are not too many games to play to get there. I hope we will win Wednesday and after.”

Newcastle boss Steve McClaren has enjoyed success in the League Cup down the years and won the competition with Middlesbrough in 2003/04.

Speaking after defeat to Watford on Saturday, their third loss on the spin, McClaren added: “I don’t think we have an identity yet.

“We are still searching for our best team. We’re also searching for the best identity within the personnel we’ve got. We have to find a way of playing.

“We have to turn it round. But I still say this is a good squad, with good players. Not winning adds to the tension and pressure and fuels the criticism we’re going to receive but to win, you need belief.”
