Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal will draw on his experience of steering the underdog to victory when Wednesday face Premier League Newcastle in round three of the Capital One Cup.
Despite the Magpies’ indifferent start to the season, the hosts are favourites to progress to round four on Wednesday night, which was acknowledged by Carvalhal in his pre-match media call at Middlewood Road:
“This is normal, it is no problem. Newcastle are in the Premier League, we are in the Championship, so yes, Newcastle will be the favourites.
“But this is the cup and in the cup there are surprises. When I coached Leixoes in Portugal we played my hometown team Braga in the semi final of Taca De Portugal Cup in 2002.
“Of course, Braga were big favourites but we played them and gave everything we had.
“We played very well and won the game and went on to the final, where we lost 1-0.
“Where can we go in this year’s Capital One Cup competition? Who knows? What I do know is that we will go to Newcastle knowing that we have been playing very well.
“We will give everything, we will have many thousands of supporters there, and we will do the very best we can.”
