The perfect plan

23 September 2015

Carlos Carvalhal hailed his players for sticking rigidly to a game-plan that yielded a 1-0 win for Wednesday in the third round of the Capital One Cup at Premier League Newcastle.

The Owls more than held their own against the top tier Magpies as the head coach saw his tactics pay dividends.

Lewis McGugan’s late winner steered Wednesday into round four, where they will host London giants Arsenal.

Carvalhal said: “It was perfect because we came here with a plan and left with a win.

“We had a strategy, we knew what we wanted to do and I have to congratulate the players because they did exactly what they were asked to do.

“We played with pace at the top with Marco Matias and Lucas Joao and I was very pleased because the game came out how we thought it would.

“Newcastle had more of the ball but we expected that and it was not a problem to us.

“We played a patient game and we struck I thought at the right moment. We should have scored again very soon after but I am happy with 1-0 at the fantastic home of a Premier League club.”

Carvalhal added: “I would like to dedicate this win to our fantastic fans who followed us here tonight and those who listened at home.

“This is a wonderful feeling for Sheffield Wednesday, it is our moment tonight and I say thank you and dedicate this to the fans.”
