Where it all began

9 September 2015

Like many clubs, Sheffield Wednesday’s roots can be traced back to a cricket club - Wednesday Club being formed nearly 200 years ago, in 1820.

Little has been previously known of those early days but a new book – The Origins of Sheffield Wednesday - written by Owls historian Jason Dickinson, covers in depth the men who founded the original club and the various personalities, and games, that ensured Wednesday Cricket Club rose to become the best team in Sheffield!

The club was so successful that is was decided in 1867 to form a football section and all the major figures, who attended that historic meeting at the Adelphi Hotel on 4 September, are also profiled for the first time.

From formation, it would be another 25 years before Wednesday Football Club was voted into the Football League and this era is also covered in great detail.

A real labour of love, the book gives an insight into the early days of both the cricket and football club and is a must read for any fan fascinated by those early pioneers in both sports, without whom today’s supporters would simply not have a side to follow.

The Origins of Sheffield Wedensday is out now and on sale at the Owls Megastore, priced £15.99
