Under-21s defeated by Palace

1 April 2016

The Owls Under-21s were beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace at Hillsborough on Friday afternoon.

The visitors went ahead through Randell Williams on the half hour mark before Sean Clare levelled for the hosts six minutes later.

Wednesday were then dealt a blow on the stroke of half time when Michael Phillips regained Palace’s one-goal lead.

The Owls started the game brightly enough and were unfortunate not to take the lead when Ryan Croasdale’s strike crashed against the crossbar.

Palace then squandered a chance to hit the front as Luke Croll missed the target from the penalty spot but the visitors made amends moments later.

Following slick play in the build-up, Williams applied an accomplished finish past Brad McDonagh to give Palace the lead after 30 minutes.

Wednesday almost responded immediately, with Clare working the ball well to tee-up Croasdale, who saw his shot blocked on the goal line but the Owls were soon back on level terms.

Jack Stobbs whipped in the cross from the right for Clare, whose first headed effort was saved by Kleton Perntreou before the midfielder prodded home the rebound.

But seconds before the half time interval, Palace regained their advantage as Phillips evaded the offside trap and finished low into the Kop net.

Chances were limited after the break, with the best falling to substitute Warren Clarke who nodded over the bar from Kevin Wright’s delivery.

Owls: McDonagh, Booker (Clarke 61), Wright, Croasdale, De Haviland, O'Grady, Stobbs (Hirst 78), Hayford, Lavery, Clare, Centeno (Meadows 65)
