The Owls Under-21s were defeated 1-0 by Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Monday evening.
A first half strike from Shane McLoughlin settled the Professional Development League Two clash.
The Owls twice went close to breaking the deadlock before the interval as Jack Stobbs saw his free kick clip the outside of the post after 30 minutes.
Caolan Lavery then shot over the bar from Stobbs’ cut back before the hosts edged in front through McLoughlin, who coolly converted past Cameron Dawson.
Wednesday pressed for a second half equaliser as Lavery shot wide of the target on the hour and Warren Clarke forced a superb stop from experienced goalkeeper Dean Gerken 20 minutes from time.
The home side almost doubled their advantage late in the contest but a fine save from Dawson kept alive Owls’ hopes of salvaging something from the game.
But alas, the hosts saw out the fixture to record a narrow victory in Suffolk.
Owls: Dawson, Tingey (Hirst 76), Penney, Lowe, O’Grady, Lee, Stobbs (Centeno 85), Croasdale, Lavery, Clare, Meadows (Clarke 70)
