An emotional connection

6 August 2016

As Wednesday gear up for the 2016/17 campaign, head coach Carlos Carvalhal says the fans are key to his team's success.

Speaking to the media before the big curtain raiser against Aston Villa at Hillsborough on Sunday, he said:

"We did a very good pre-season and are with a good dynamic. We are ready for the competition to start on Sunday. I am absolutely sure that it will be one of the afternoons with a crowded stadium.
"I think that we have the best fans in this club, who can make a massive difference in the competition.

“If there are any mistakes, they support our team and our players, and give applause to them, and push them, the answer will be very strong from our players.

Carvalhal warmly recalled the Wednesdayites' fanfare at last season's Championship play-off final against Hull at Wembley, saying: "This is something that we have in our hearts, something that I mentioned to the players in the first day of the season. It was an emotional moment.

"We believe that we are not playing with eleven players on Sunday, but with 27,000 or 28,000 fans. They will be with us on the pitch.

“To me, football is about this environment and the emotional connection with the players and the fans. It's something that we cannot forget."
