Ex-Owl on return with Villa

2 August 2016

Former Wednesday loanee Joe Bennett will return to Hillsborough this weekend for the first time since his temporary spell last season.

The 26-year-old made four appearances for the Owls on loan from Aston Villa during 2015/16.

The left back will be on the opposing side this weekend as the Villans arrive for the curtain-raiser and for Bennett, it’s the perfect game to begin.

He told Aston Villa’s official website: “It’s the perfect opener in my eyes.

“There’s a huge crowd expected and it’s no surprise it’s been picked for TV either. It’s a great way to start the season. It’s an exciting game to begin with.

“We’ll be doing absolutely everything to get off to the best start possible.

“We’re after the three points. We want to start the season in the best way possible. That’s the aim.”

Bennett joined Wednesday in January 2016, making his debut in the 3-2 FA Cup defeat at Shrewsbury.

He went on to feature in the Championship for the Owls in the goalless draws away at Hull and Brighton and the 1-0 win in the trip to Huddersfield.

He added: “I obviously know the lads. I played a few games for them towards the end of the season.

“It will be good to go back and see them but clearly I want Villa to go there and start the season well.”
