Wednesday captain Glenn Loovens made a winning return after missing the start of the season through injury, helping the Development Squad overcome Birmingham last Friday at Hillsborough.

The Dutch defender started for Neil Thompson's side and gained a valuable hour of playing time.

Happy with his progress, Loovens said: "It was good to be back on the pitch again after being out injured.

“I had a good week of training and it resulted in playing an hour of the game. I felt fine all week, and felt good and strong as well. So I am feeling ready.

"It is never the right time to get injured. I guess the timing is good now that there is an international break coming up, so I have got two weeks to get back really fit."

Loovens has hailed the strength in depth at the heart of the defence and although determined to make up for lost time, is more than aware of the competition in the camp.

He added: "We want to go places and that means you have a good group of players who should all compete with each other. I expect a tough fight between us.

"It is up to me and the other boys to make it hard for the manager to make his choice.”
