Mirror of the city

1 August 2016

With the dawn of a new campaign around the corner, Carlos Carvalhal has spoken passionately about the kind of team he wants to lead into battle.

Wednesday kick off 2016/17 on Sunday with a clash against Aston Villa, having successfully come through their pre-season schedule in good shape.

The head coach says it is important the players at the club give everything they have for Wednesday, to work hard and fight for the team.

He explained: “Our brand at Sheffield Wednesday is workers and fighters.

“We want these kind of players. And because the players have very good ability and quality also, we will play good football.

“I want my team to be the mirror of this city. I want them to fight a lot, run a lot and fight for Sheffield Wednesday.

“We are the image of the city, we want to be the image of the city, we know the tradition of the city is people who work hard in life.

“The most important is that we go onto the pitch like gladiators.”

Recent recruits Daniel Pudil and Almen Abdi fit perfectly into that mould as Carlos continued:

“With Daniel, it is easy for him to adapt because he has had one year with us.

“Abdi has a good character, he is a team worker, he will adapt very easy to the way that we play because he is a player that understands football.

“All the players we bring in must adapt to us, Sheffield Wednesday will not adapt to the players.

“The players must work hard to the team, play aggressive and understand the defensive part of the team.

“To play for Sheffield Wednesday, you must be a fighter. If you are not a fighter, you don’t have any chance to play for Sheffield Wednesday.”
