Carlos Carvalhal was pleased with his side’s performance after the Owls beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Hillsborough on the opening day of the season.
Fernando Forestieri’s well-taken goal late in the second half secured three points for Wednesday against the Villains, who were relegated from the Premier League last season.
Carvalhal said: “Before the game I said we were ready for the competition.
“Compared to last season we were more compact and more aggressive.
“We moved the ball well and when we didn’t have the ball we had a good reaction.
“In the second half Aston Villa were strong and they caused some problems when they were putting crosses into the box, so we made some changes to try and win the match.
On the winning goal from Fernando Forestieri on 86 minutes, Carlos said: “When Fernando got through, more often than not he puts the ball into the net.
“From the point when we scored the goal I knew we would go on to win the match because the players had high energy and they all fight for the team.
“We have a team full of special players and even though we played against a very strong team, we deserved to win this game.”
