One chance to be remembered

26 December 2016

Carlos Carvalhal was delighted with the result and performance following the Owls’ 1-0 win against league leaders Newcastle at St James’ Park on Boxing Day.

Glenn Loovens’ first goal for the club sealed all three points for Wednesday in what was a resilient team display all over the field.

Carvalhal said: “I said in the week that we are Sheffield Wednesday.

“I hear a lot this week about the Wednesday team in the past that beat Sheffield United on Boxing Day and how everybody remembers those players.

“I tell my players that you only get one chance to be remembered, in the end people don’t remember how much money you have, but they will remember when Sheffield Wednesday come to St James’ Park and win on Boxing Day.

“We caused the opposition a lot of problems with our attacking, I think the goalkeeper was their best player, which shows how many chances we created.

“I am happy for Glenn Loovens to score his first goal, we know that we have goals in our defenders because they are strong headers of the ball.”

Wednesday’s fans were in fine voice throughout the match and Carvalhal praised the travelling support on Tyneside.

The head coach added: “I could hear them all the way through the game.

“They support us all the way through once again and they helped us.

“We are happy with this result but now we don’t have time to celebrate.

“We have two games coming up fast so know we must work to prepare for these just as we have tonight.”
