Report: Preston 1-1 Wednesday

31 December 2016

The Owls hit back right at the last to salvage a draw against Preston at Deepdale.

Trailing to a Sam Hutchinson own goal late in the second half, Wednesday levelled in stoppage time, with Adam Reach firing his first for the club.

The late, late equaliser was an undoubted highlight for the visitors, who were under par, but still came away with what could prove a priceless point come the end of the campaign.

The Owls started well enough, though, stroking the ball around with confidence, but Preston slowly but surely took control and fired the first warning shot when Callum Robinson forced Keiren Westwood into a diving save.

Simon Makienok then steered a header the wrong side of the post as the Lilywhites grew notably more threatening.

Wednesday were soaking up the pressure but weathered the storm to conclude a first half lacking incident or big talking points.

Both sides needed to up the ante for the second period and the Owls made a change, with David Jones replacing Atdhe Nuhiu, allowing Reach to push further up the park.

But the home side created first as Alex Baptiste shot narrowly over the crossbar, only for Wednesday to respond with Steven Fletcher a whisker away from Barry Bannan’s cross.

Play was soon back at the other end and Westwood thwarted Paul Gallagher at the back post before the Owls’ keeper denied Robinson once more.

But Preston were not to be denied and they hit the front on 78 minutes.

Cunningham tried his luck from the left on the angle and the ball deflected from the knee of the unfortunate Hutchinson and in.

Former Owls loanee Aiden McGeady rattled the post five minutes before the end and that proved key as Wednesday struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Bannan showed composure to cause mayhem in the Preston penalty area and after Hutchinson and Fletcher went close, the ball fell kindly for Reach to smash home from close range.

Wednesday: Westwood, Palmer (Hunt 62), Lees, Loovens, Pudil, Wallace (Joao 80), Hutchinson, Bannan, Reach, Nuhiu (Jones 46), Fletcher
