We played to the end

17 December 2016

Steven Fletcher’s stoppage time penalty was the difference in the Owls’ 1-0 win over Rotherham at Hillsborough and the Scot said he knew that if the team kept going, the goal would come.

It was a frustrating game for Wednesday who couldn’t break down the Millers’ door, until Lucas Joao was brought down in the area by ex-Owl Richard Wood in the area and Fletcher stepped up to tuck home from the spot.

Fletcher said: “I thought it was never going to happen! We had chances but they kept going straight at the goalkeeper.

“I was happy to get the penalty at the end and tuck it away. I just composed myself, I knew where I was going to put it.

“We know we always have to keep going because we know that we’re going to get chances.

“We always play until the end, because we felt the goal was coming, so we’re glad we got the goal.

The penalty was Fletcher’s sixth goal of the season, and the Scotland international says he is happy to be playing regularly after injuries sustained earlier in the campaign.

He added: “I’m glad to be back after the niggling injuries I had at the start of the season.

“It’s good to be playing games and scoring goals because that’s what I want to do.”
