Tonight’s clash between the Owls and Barnsley will be the first since February 2014.
And the last still lives in the memory after a dramatic S6 encounter.
Heading into the last meeting between the two back in 2013/14, both the Owls and the Reds were in need of the points to ease fears of relegation.
Wednesday went into the game just three points above the bottom three, though on a nine-game unbeaten run, while Barnsley were five adrift of safety.
With plenty riding on the derby, a fiery affair unfolded.
Barnsley were reduced to ten men after just 30 minutes when debutant Emmanuel Frimpong picked up his second yellow card.
From then, the hosts bossed possession but saw their numerical advantage cancelled out ten minutes from time when Jermaine Johnson saw red for a dangerous challenge on Brek Shea.
Incredibly, Jacob Mellis was then dismissed in the 90th minute for the visitors, again for another rash challenge and the nine men of Barnsley could not hold on.
Jim O’Brien’s mishit clearance fell to Jose Semedo, who played to Chris Maguire 30 yards from goal.
Little seemed on for the Scot, who opted to shoot from range in the 97th minute and beat goalkeeper Luke Steele with a firm low drive into the Kop net.
