Crewe’s Under-18s came from behind to win an entertaining encounter by the odd goal in five at Middlewood Road on Saturday.
The Owls, though, had more than enough chances to win the game but it was the Alex that had the cutting edge in front of goal to seal victory.
Wednesday had the perfect start, with Warren Clarke drilling in off the inside of the post just three minutes in.
But after missing chances to extend their lead, the Owls conceded four minutes before the interval.
Then moments after the restart, Crewe stole into the lead – before promptly bagging another goal from the penalty spot.
Undaunted, Wednesday continued to carve openings and deservedly reduced the arrears through Jordan Lonchar.
That strike triggered a late onslaught but the mountain was just too high to climb and the visitors travelled back over the Pennines with the points.
