Putting down a marker

1 February 2016

Ross Wallace wants to put down a marker this week in terms of taking maximum points from promotion rivals.

As the Owls aim to strengthen their bid for elevation this season, one huge step would be to claim victory over the likes of Burnley and Birmingham, who are next-up for Wednesday.

Save the Blues, who the Owls defeated 3-0 on Boxing Day, Wednesday have been left frustrated against the teams at the top of the Championship.

Defeat earlier in the season at Turf Moor was particularly a tough one to take given the performance from the visitors, but Wallace is keen to put that right at Hillsborough.

“That’s probably the marker we want to put down,” he said.

“We played well against the teams above us at the start of the season, we just haven’t managed to get that winning goal.

“That’ll be something we want to put right in the second half of the season.”

As Wednesday come up against Wallace’s former employers on Tuesday, the tricky winger has reflected fondly on his time in Lancashire.

He said: “I have great memories and had a great time there. It was five or six years I had and we managed to get promotion a couple of times.

“I had to move on because sometimes you need a fresh start and that was it.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being at Sheffield Wednesday for the last seven or eight months.

“Considering this group was only put together at the start of the season, we have a great team spirit and we’re looking to do well this season.”
