Good connections and part of history

7 January 2016

Prior to his arrival in Sheffield 6, Carlos Carvalhal has enjoyed success and long lasting relationships with supporters of his previous clubs.

A flick through the history books of the likes of Leixões and Vitória Setúbal, and it won’t be long before the name Carvalhal appears.

He said: “When I was coach of Leixões in the Third Division and we got to the final of the cup and went to the Europa League, in that moment with the fans it was amazing.

“The connection between me and them was unbelievable. I know I am part of the story of that club.

“When I was with Vitoria Setubal it was exactly the same. There is a lot of enthusiasm in the team and the connection I had there with the fans was also amazing because we promoted the team from Second Division to First.

“After, we put the team in the Europa League and won the domestic cup. I am sure I am part of the story of that club, absolutely sure.

“In Sporting and Beşiktaş, they are big clubs so all the time they have 40,000 in the stadium and have many fans, both clubs.

“The connection I have with those fans, especially Beşiktaş is still absolutely fantastic.”

Now the head coach is hoping to reach the same heights with the Owls and bring success to Hillsborough and he went on to say:

“At Sheffield Wednesday, there is a feeling that we can do something good. We are doing good at this moment which means we are in good way.

“I still think about football in its pure form. To me, football is me, the players and the fans.

“This is what I like in football. A coach to train and improve the players, the players do what we plan and the fans support the team.

“I have this romantic vision of the football. When I have this kind of environment, like what we have in this moment, we have done well and I hope we can do the same here.”
