Owls to receive welcome squad boost

26 January 2016

As the Sky Bet Championship season hots up, Wednesday are set to welcome back key players to the squad.

The introduction of returning players from injury will come at a timely period in the campaign as the Owls aim to maintain their top-six status.

With a hugely important spell coming up, including games against fellow promotion-chasers Burnley and Birmingham following Saturday’s cup clash with Shrewsbury, Carlos Carvalhal is happy with the extra options available and strength in depth.

“This week we’ll have Lewis McGugan back, we have Marco Matias ready next week, we have Michael Turner back, Westwood is back and Alex Lopez is also ok.

“Tom Lees is near and these will be like new players for me because I haven’t seen them in a long time,” he said.

Having tied down the likes of Sam Hutchinson, Glenn Loovens and Atdhe Nuhiu, along with the permanent signing of Gary Hooper and loan addition of Joe Bennett, January has been a very productive month for Wednesday.

On the rest of the January transfer window, the head coach added:

“The most important thing is to recover our players because we play a lot of games with 19/20 players available but we will have 23/24 players able to play.

“After this, we are in a very good position in the market because we will have back five or six players.

“We are in the market with our eyes open and if something comes, we will do that. If not, we don’t want to bring in any players who will not increase the team.

“We have received Joe Bennett and we are happy with him.”
