‘They were exceptional’

4 January 2016

Joe Wildsmith made his tenth appearance of the season on Saturday as Wednesday began 2016 with a 1-0 victory at Fulham.

Five of those appearances have seen the Owls emerge with clean sheets and Wildsmith has paid special tribute to his team mates, after registering the most recent shutout at Craven Cottage.

Following Wednesday’s impressive three-point haul in the capital, Wildsmith said:

“I thought everyone put a shift in and the clean sheet was a bonus.

“It’s good for me to keep a clean sheet but I’ve got to thank the defenders in front of me because they were exceptional.

“The clean sheet on Saturday was testament to their hard work. They’ve made my job easier by playing like they have, so I can only thank them.”

Wednesday now switch their attention to the FA Cup on Saturday as they host Fulham once again in the third round this weekend.

Heading into the game with three wins from the previous four games, Wildsmith says the squad are buoyant having bounced back from defeat at Middlesbrough.

“I thought it would be a tough game going to Fulham,” he said. “But coming away from the Boro game, the boys wanted to show what they’re all about.

“It’s always good to begin the year well and we’ve bounced back and started it with three points.”
