Bannan belter cancelled out at the last

13 July 2016

The Owls kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against National League North side Alfreton.

A wonderful long range hit from Barry Bannan opened the scoring in the second half but Paul Clayton headed a late equaliser to give the hosts a share of the spoils at the Impact Arena.

The now traditional summer opener was a lively and overall even encounter, with the Owls looking the more likely in front of goal overall.

Carlos Carvalhal opted for effectively two teams for each half, spearheaded in the first 45 by Atdhe Nuhiu, who went close with a diving header inside five minutes.

Tom Lees then headed narrowly wide before Alfreton began to grow into the game.

Dan Bradley and Andy Monkhouse had half chances but ex-Town loanee Joe Wildsmith was untroubled between the sticks.

Fellow former Alfreton loan keeper started the second period for the Owls, who gave new signing Steven Fletcher his first outing.

But it was Bannan who caught the eye with a stunning strike on 56 minutes from distance that positively flew into the top corner.

The midfield man linked up well with Fletcher before pulling the trigger to put Wednesday into the lead.

The Owls were comfortable for the remainder of the friendly fixture – Gary Hooper and Fletcher both went close - but were hit right at the last by Clayton, who glanced home at the near post with less than a minute left on the clock.

Wednesday: Wildsmith (Dawson), Hunt (Vermijl), Lees, Hutchinson (J Lee), Helan (Palmer), Semedo (Bannan), K Lee (Melo) (Hirst), Matias (McGugan), Nuhiu (Hooper), Joao (Fletcher)

Attendance: 1,176
