Report: Wednesday 1-0 Benfica

20 July 2016

WEDNESDAY 1-0 BENFICA
Forestieri 28

The Owls welcomed Portuguese giants Benfica to Hillsborough for their first pre-season fixture on home soil and emerged with a 1-0 win.

As was widely predicted, the game was an entertaining affair that saw chances at both ends, with Wednesday holding the advantage.

Fernando Forestieri duly opened the scoring midway through the first half, seizing on a defensive slip to slam home on the angle from ten yards.

And moments later, Barry Bannan almost doubled the lead with a fierce volley from distance that whistled past the post.

Earlier, Benfica looked threatening but once they found their stride, the Owls went on to dominate the opening period, save a late effort from Rui Fonte that debutant keeper Jake Kean comfortably saved.

The second half saw the hosts stay in the box seat, with Lucas Joao instrumental in carving a flurry of openings.

One intricate move saw Forestieri go close before Bannan unloaded from 25 yards but again the shot fizzed just past the post.

Benfica grew into game towards the closing stages and Guedes drilled low and hard but wide before the same player forced Tom Lees into evasive action just inside the six-yard box.

Lisandro headed inches wide with Kean at full stretch ten minutes from time and that was as good as it got for the Portuguese champions as the Owls held out for victory.

Wednesday: Kean, Hunt, Palmer, Lees, Hutchinson, Wallace (Vermijl 63), Matias (Semedo 72), Lee (Melo 77), Bannan (Hirst 90), Joao (Helan 83), Forestieri (Nuhiu 63)

Attendance: 12,207
