Signal of intent

5 July 2016

Barry Bannan believes the arrival of Scotland team mate Steven Fletcher is a strong signal of intent from the Owls early in pre-season.

The former Sunderland man linked up with the squad on Monday for the first day of pre-season following his switch to Wednesday.

Bannan is all too familiar with the international striker and is excited to have him on board for the coming season at Hillsborough.

“He’s a very good striker, I’ve played with him a few times at international level, he’s played at the very top and I think he will be a very good addition for us,” Bannan said.

“He’s a good lad, I’ve met up with him a few times recently with Scotland and got on really well with him.

“He’ll have no problems fitting in, I’ve seen what he can do and he’ll be really up for it this season.

“He’ll be out to prove a point to everybody and show what a good player he is.”

Fletcher now joins the likes of Gary Hooper, Fernando Forestieri, Atdhe Nuhiu and Lucas Joao in a strong-looking attack and Bannan says things are shaping up well in the early throes.

He added: “Last season we signed the likes of Hooper and Forestieri and the manager and chairman have already carried that on this season by signing Fletcher and I’m sure there will be more coming in.

“They are all great strikers, we have got a bit of everything which will keep everybody on their toes and be good for the club moving forward.”
