With the reveal of the 2016/17 EFL fixtures round the corner, swfc.co.uk takes a look at the coming Sky Bet Championship campaign.
Relegated sides form the Premier League Newcastle, Norwich and Aston Villa will compete in the Championship along with Wigan, Burton Albion and Barnsley who all gained promotion from League 1.
With the runners and riders confirmed, Owls fans will travel over 5,000 miles in total throughout the coming campaign.
The closest fixture will be Wednesday’s 15-mile round trip to the New York Stadium in the South Yorkshire derby with Rotherham.
During the past two seasons, it has proved a happy hunting ground for Wednesday with that dramatic 3-2 victory in 2014/15 and 2-1 win last time out.
Following the Reds’ promotion via the League 1 play-offs, the 24-mile round trip to Barnsley is close behind.
In terms of the new additions to the Championship, Owls fans will be all too familiar with St James’ Park after the 2015/16 League Cup victory over Newcastle.
Meetings with Norwich have been fairly regular down the years and as recent as April 2015, though Wednesday’s trip to Villa Park will be the first since November 2001 and the first league meeting since 1999/2000.
Efan Ekoku’s goal settled the League Cup meeting the last time the two sides met.
Wednesday defeated Wigan both home and away in 2014/15, while the Owls and Burton Albion have never met at first team level.
The longest round trips of the campaign will see Wednesday travel as far as Brighton (464 miles), Cardiff (406 miles), Reading (385 miles), Bristol City (374 miles), Ipswich (371 miles) and Fulham (361 miles).
Of course, the order of all these fixtures will be confirmed on Wednesday 22 June at 9.00am.
