Owls on the international stage

23 March 2016

International action takes centre stage this week and there are five Sheffield Wednesday first team players away with their respective nations.

Here, swc.co.uk reviews where and when the international Owls will be in action!

Daniel Pudil

The Owls left back has been called up to the Czech Republic squad that face Scotland in Prague on Thursday 24 March, followed by a clash with Sweden in Stockholm on Tuesday 29 March.

The 30-year-old, who is on loan from Premier League side Watford, featured twice for his country earlier this season against Serbia and Poland.

Pudil has made 33 appearances for the Owls in all competitions this term.

Barry Bannan

The midfielder’s hot run of form has earned him a recall back into the Scotland squad.

The Scots face a double header later this month against Czech Republic and Denmark and have named two separate squads for each game.

Bannan will be in the 19 that will head to Prague on Thursday 24 March at the Stadion Letna and could feature against Owls teammate Pudil in the Czech squad.

Lucas Joao

Lucas Joao has been selected for the Portugal Under-23s in a preparation game for the Olympic Games to be held in Rio this summer.

Portugal will face Mexico on 28 March at the Estádio João Paulo II, Angra do Heroísmo, Azores.

The Wednesday striker has proved a popular performer at Hillsborough since signing from Portuguese outfit Nacional in July 2015.

Joao has scored key goals against the likes of Brentford, Huddersfield and Arsenal, posting his maiden international call along the way.

Joe Wildsmith

Owls goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith has received a call-up to the England Under-21 squad.

Gareth Southgate’s side face Switzerland in a UEFA European Championship qualifier in Thun. The game will be staged on Saturday 26 March at the Stockhorn Arena, with kick off at 6.00pm.

Wildsmith has been involved in the England Under-21 set-up since back in October, when he was elevated from Under-20 to 21 level.

The young shot stopper has recently returned to action from a back injury and was reinstalled on the bench for the Owls’ won over Charlton on Saturday.

Aiden McGeady

Aiden McGeady has been named in Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland squad.

The on-loan winger will be in the Eire squad that face two friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia.

Both fixtures are scheduled to take place in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, with the clash against Switzerland on Friday 25 and Slovakia on Tuesday 29 March.
