Young Owls impress in Portugal

29 March 2016

The Owls Under-12s have returned from Madeira after impressing through an international tournament across Europe.

Wednesday ended the competition in third place, losing narrowly to eventual winners Benfica.

The young Owls breezed past the group stages, winning all four games against FC Boaventura, CF Uniao De Madeira, FC Andorinha and CF Carvalherio, and scoring more goals than any other team in the process.

CD National were overcome in the quarter finals before Wednesday finally fell at the last four stage to Benfica.

Maritmo provided the opposition in the third-place play-off, which the Owls won following a penalty shootout.

In a further boost, shot-stopper Jack Hall was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

Youth Development Phase Manager Ben Wilkinson said:

“The tournament provided a great experience for the boys, playing international teams in a completely different environment.

“It also taught them about being away from home and being around their fellow players day in, day out.

“I am pleased to say they equipped themselves very well on and off the pitch.

“The tournament organisers looked after us so well from the first minute to last - the tournament itself was very well run - and we would like to thank them for their hospitality.”
