Happy to start at home

9 May 2016

Reward for finishing third and fourth in the Championship is playing the crucial second leg of the play-off semi final on home soil.

Wednesday’s first leg will be at Hillsborough against third-place finishers Brighton but that situation more than suits Carlos Carvalhal.

Under the lights at Hillsborough on Friday, Wednesdayites will be out in force to back the players and Carvalhal welcomes this S6 opportunity.

“I must say, I am happy to play home first, I am happy to play in front of our fans.

“Our team is not an easy team for the opponents in our home all season.”

Carlos is no stranger to two-legged ties with plenty at stake.

The former Vitoria Setubal, Sporting Lisbon, Besiktas and Istanbul head coach has experience of the big nights in Europe over two legs.

Although there are notable differences with the play-offs, Carlos reflected back on those games and said:

“I did a lot of games in the UEFA competition and I prefer to play home first in this kind of situation.

“It is different because the goals away from your home have more value than the home games in that competition.

“We’ll be ready on Friday to do a good match.”
