REPORT: Wolves 2-1 Owls
Wednesday wrapped up the regular Championship season with a 2-1 defeat at Wolves.
A Michael Turner own goal and George Savile strike proved enough for the points on a warm afternoon in the Black Country.
Lewis McGugan pulled a late goal back from the penalty spot to give Wednesday a glimmer of hope but it was too little too late for the visitors.
With a play-off slot already secured, it was all change for the Owls, who made ten changes with next weekend in mind.
Only Lucas Joao remained from the starting line XI that beat Cardiff last time out as Carlos Carvalhal shuffled his pack.
And Wednesday were dealt a blow on nine minutes when Wolves went ahead in fortuitous circumstances.
Defender Matt Doherty raced to the by-line and pulled back into the danger area, where Turner inadvertently deflected into his own net off the inside of the post.
But the Owls almost hit straight back after Atdhe Nuhiu was tripped right on the edge of the area and McGugan drilled hard and low only for Cark Ikeme to pull off a top drawer save.
Then on the half-hour mark, fortune came within inches of favouring Wednesday when Aiden McGeady took aim from 20 yards and a deflection completely wrong-footed Ikeme, who was mightily relieved as the ball arrowed past the post.
At the other end moments later, luck was back with the Owls when a rasping Savile shot came back into play off the upright but the midfielder soon went one better on 35 minutes.
Doherty again darted down the left channel and picked out Savile, who made no mistake on the half volley.
The Owls had a chance to halve the arrears hit back immediately after the resumption but Nuhiu headed McGeady’s cross over the bar
The big man then went close from a Jeremy Helan feed before Liam Palmer smashed an angled drive narrowly wide.
Academy graduate Jack Stobbs was given a rare outing in the closing stages and looked lively down the right, earning his side successive corners, the second of which saw Vincent Sasso just failing to get a good connection.
The remaining few minutes were relatively even until, with one to go, the Owls were awarded a penalty when a Palmer cross was handled by James Henry.
McGugan stepped up to convert from the spot but Wolves held on for a welcome win – while Wednesday cast their focus six days ahead to the play-offs.
