Owls beat table-topping Terriers

14 November 2016

The Owls’ Under-23s inflicted a 1-0 defeat on table-toppers Huddersfield at Sheffield FC on Monday afternoon, courtesy of a Fraser Preston goal and a super display from goalkeeper Dan Wallis.

The hosts had moments of their own in the final third and registered their first shot on target as early as the second minute through Sean Clare but Town custodian George Dorrington saved well.

The Terriers grew into the game and the outstanding Wallis served up four sublime stops in the space of ten minutes to deny the visitors an advantage going into half time.

It was Wednesday who turned the screw after the restart and skipper Jack Stobbs' stinging effort was pawed away by Dorrington, while Connor O'Grady came close with a cushioned header.

Then the decisive strike came for the Owls on 55 minutes as Preston calmly slotted home his second Under-23s goal of the season from a Devante Rodney feed.

For Huddersfield, striker Rekeil Pyke's attempt posed a late threat but Wallis was once again unbeatable between the sticks to preserve Wednesday's slender lead to the final whistle.

Wednesday: Wallis, Centeno (Murphy 59), Penney, Kirby, O'Grady, Thorniley, Stobbs, Clare, Rodney (Lonchar 75), Clarke, Preston
