Report: Wednesday 1-2 Ipswich

5 November 2016

Wednesday were hit by a late Ipswich winner at Hillsborough following a contest they largely dominated.

The Owls went behind in the first half to a Tom Lawrence strike before Gary Hooper promptly equalised.

But with three minutes left on the clock the Tractor Boys sealed their second away win of the season with a Luke Chambers header.

The Owls were well on top from the off, with Ipswich forced on the back foot for the lion’s share of proceedings until they went into the lead on 34 minutes against the run of play.

Lawrence jinked his way forward and unleashed a low drive that fizzed past Keiren Westwood and into the bottom corner.

But the lead didn’t last for long – or three minutes to be precise. David Jones linked up well with Kieran Lee before firing goalwards and Bartosz Bialkowski could only parry into the path of Hooper, who clipped home from close range.

In the main, chances were few and far between, although the Owls looked the more likely.

Steven Fletcher went close, narrowly heading over the crossbar from a Jones corner and Wednesday perked up after the break.

And almost from the whistle, they came close to going ahead. Hooper burst forward into the box and forced Bialkowski into a fine save – Kieran Lee was inches away with the rebound.

Fletcher asked the question again with a firm header following good work from Jack Hunt and the Owls continued with their grip on the game.

Jones tried his luck from distance, Barry Bannan was thwarted at the last by Chambers and Ross Wallace hit into the side netting.

Ipswich, though, held firm and were content to hit the hosts on the break.

The Owls knocked on the door through the closing stages but couldn’t quite make the breakthrough and the visitors snatched it with three minutes to go when Chambers was on hand at the far post to profit from a Grant Ward free kick.

Wednesday: Westwood, Hunt, Hutchinson, Lees, Pudil, Jones (Wallace 74), Bannan, Lee, Reach (Forestieri 56), Hooper (Abdi 81), Fletcher
