Hirst hat-trick hits Leeds

2 October 2016

A George Hirst hat-trick downed local rivals Leeds at Middlewood Road on Saturday.

The Owls’ striker showed a ruthless edge in front of goal as his side emerged with the derby honours.

The Under-18s contest started at a frantic pace, during which Wednesday took the lead ten minutes in.

Fraser Preston crossed for Jordan Lonchar to find Hirst, who nudged in from close range.

Lonchar volleyed over the bar moments later before the Owls doubled their lead on 20 minutes when Hirst took possession from deep and advanced to rifle in the bottom corner

The in-form striker went close to his treble before the interval and Joe Cook rattled the woodwork, leaving Leeds relieved to hear the half time whistle.

The visitors showed more after the resumption, albeit without troubling the Owls’ defence, and they were punished once more in the last minute when Hirst completed his hat-trick, thumping home a Ben Hughes feed from six yards.

Wednesday: Wallis, Hughes, West, Kirby, Lee, Cook, Lonchar (Reaney 80), Waldock, Hirst, Hunt (Brennan 70), Preston
