Important to us

Liam Palmer extended his contract with the Owls this week and it is a move completely welcomed by Carlos Carvalhal.

The home-grown talent has featured ten times for the Owls this season and 142 times in total since rising through the club’s academy.

The head coach said: “It’s important because he is a player that was ‘born’ in the academy, he is a Sheffield Wednesday player.

“He has value and it is important that we keep the players who have abilities, who are improving and getting better and better like Liam Palmer.

“It’s important to him and important to Sheffield Wednesday. It’s important to us to be with a player like Liam in the squad.”

Having progressed well in the youth system, Palmer made his senior bow over six years ago in a cup clash with Bury at Hillsborough.

Looking towards the current academy set-up, Carlos believes there are numerous prospects there that will one day challenge for a first team spot.

Excited by the levels at which the Sheffield Wednesday academy now operate, he added:

“When we arrived it wasn’t a revolution but we wanted to improve the academy, we move a lot of things and they are much better in this moment at the academy.

“We are looking to the players and some of them we believe in the future can play in the first team.

“Often they are training with us, we know them very well and believe in the short-medium time, we will have more academy players in the first team.”
