Owls at the ready

5 October 2016

No Championship action this weekend, of course – but the Owls are well represented on the international stage.

Indeed, no less than four Wednesday players were called up for duty last week, representing Scotland, Republic of Ireland and England Under-18s.

Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher got the nod as Scotland play two World Cup 2018 qualifiers, against Lithuania and Slovakia.

Gordon Strachan’s side host Lithuania on Saturday at Hampden Park (7.45pm) before travelling across Europe to face Slovakia at the Anton Malatinsky City Arena (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, Keiren Westwood’s Republic of Ireland also play back to back World Cup qualifiers for the Russia showpiece.

First up is a home clash with Georgia at the Aviva Stadium this Thursday, 6 October (7.45pm) before the squad jet out to face Moldova the following Sunday at the Stadionul Zimbru (9.45pm).

Finally, George Hirst will be in line to represent England Under-18s, who tackle Sweden in two quickfire contests.

Both games take place in Scandinavia, the first in Kungsangens on Friday 7 October (5.00pm), then in Tibblevallen on Sunday 9 October (12.00pm).
