Under-18s run halted by Millwall

16 October 2016

The Under-18s’ winning streak came to an end in the capital on Saturday as Millwall emerged 3-1 victors.

The hosts hit three late goals to take the points, although on another day the Owls would have returned with something to show for their efforts having created a string of chances and dominated passages of play.

Heading into the game on the back of five straight wins, Wednesday were in confident mood and started well accordingly.

Connor Kirby was pulling the strings and Fraser Preston hit the crossbar before Ben Hughes struck on 19 minutes to give the Owls a deserved lead.

George Hirst almost found a way through just before the break but was denied by a good save and Wednesday went down the tunnel a goal to the good.

The second half, though, swung the way of Millwall, who certainly upped the ante and tempo of their game.

And the Lions made their pressure tell after Preston twice went close to doubling the lead.

Three goals – on 70, 76 and 87 minutes – stunned the Owls, who could arguably count themselves unfortunate given the overall balance of play.
