Report: Wednesday 2-1 Wigan

10 September 2016

Wednesday came from behind to get back to winning ways at Hillsborough with a 2-1 triumph over Wigan.

A relatively one-sided contest eventually fell in the Owls’ favour after Will Grigg gave the Latics an early lead and Steven Fletcher equalised before Fernando Forestieri fired what proved the winner.

But what had the makings of a good start for Wednesday had soon turned as moments after Forestieri saw an appeal for a penalty waved away, Wigan struck first blood.

With just four minutes on the clock, Grigg pounced in the six-yard box to convert after Michael Jacobs took advantage of a misplaced pass from Tom Lees.

But Wednesday held their nerve, continued with their passing game and levelled on 29 minutes.

Barry Bannan picked out Fletcher on the angle and the striker stabbed across Adam Bogdan and in to claim his first goal in a blue and white shirt.

From that juncture, the Owls dominated the remainder of almost the whole game, allowing Wigan only an occasional attack, the most productive of which ended with Keiren Westwood tipping a Luke Burke shot over the bar.

Just before the break, though, Wednesday were a whisker from hitting the front when Ross Wallace clipped agonisingly wide having taken a delicious Bannan pass into his stride.

The second period followed the theme of the first with Wigan camped in their own half and the Owls well on top.

Fletcher looped a header onto the crossbar and Wallace went close with a daisycutter before Kieran Lee fired narrowly over from distance.

Carlos Carvalhal introduced Gary Hooper on the hour but it was Forestieri who took centre stage on 62 minutes.

The livewire forward linked up well with Lee to force a save from Adam Bogdan but the keeper could do little about the rebound that Forestieri slotted home to seal the points.

Wednesday: Westwood, Palmer, Lees, Hutchinson, Pudil (Reach 77), Lee, Abdi (Hooper 60), Bannan (Buckley 86), Wallace, Forestieri, Fletcher
