Three points but room for improvement

27 September 2016

Wednesday’s Development Squad impressed with an enterprising display in their 2-1 home win over Colchester United on Monday at Middlewood Road.

Goals from Matt Penney and George Hirst fashioned the side’s fourth league victory of the season, with the U’s scoring through Decarrey Sheriff in between.

Owls coach Neil Thompson said he was happy with the result, albeit the players could raise the bar in front of goal:

“We created a lot of chances again, but we just made a hard work of it. We were 1-0 up, but it could have been maybe three or four comfortably.

“A lot of chances, a lot of decent play but if you don’t put it to bed and get that second goal, they have always got a chance.

“If we win the ascendancy and we have got lots of chances, you have got to make it count, and that is certainly something we need to work on. But it is very pleasing, another three points and that breeds confidence for the boys.”

With seven league matches under their belt, Wednesday’s Under-23s have picked up wins against Millwall, Birmingham, Watford and Colchester, while drawing against Sheffield United and Palace. Their solitary defeat was versus Coventry.

Thompson praised his squad’s work ethic and said the training methods are taking the youngsters in the right direction on matchday: “They have always been bright in training and it is about putting that into practice on matchdays.

“We just need to be a little bit more ruthless in that last third of the pitch, and when we get chances, make sure we find the back of the net.”
