Under-18s run continues

15 September 2016

An in-form Wednesday swept Coventry aside at Middlewood Road on Thursday, winning 3-0.

A George Hirst strike and Jordan Lonchar double did the damage as the Under-18s posted their third successive victory.

After Coventry created the first chance – Jordan Ponticelli’s deflected effort rolling narrowly wide – the Owls took control.

Fraser Preston went close having been sent through by Liam Waldock and Hirst just missed the target from distance.

Proceedings were not all one-way, though, and keeper Dan Wallis saved well from Lewis Green - before Wednesday made the breakthrough when Hirst beat two defenders and unleashed a fierce drive that flew into the top corner.

Coventry hit back and Ponticelli thought he had levelled only for Wallis to produce a superb save from six yards before the same player hit the post on the angle.

But the Owls doubled their lead and all but made the points safe through Lonchar, who clipped home following a telling pass from Ciaran Brennan.

Moments later, the outcome was settled when Lochar applied the finishing touch to a Hirst flick-on.

Wednesday: Wallis, Hughes (Brennan 60), West, Kirby, Lee, Cook, Lonchar (Reaney 81), Waldock, Hirst (Swaine 84), Hunt, Preston
