Report: Rotherham 0-2 Wednesday

4 April 2017

A Steven Fletcher first half double shot Wednesday back into the play-off equation as they emerged 2-0 winners at local rivals Rotherham.

The already relegated Millers gave a good account of themselves but it was the quality in front of goal that proved the difference as Fletcher dispatched the two clear chances he had.

Rotherham had their moments and early on as Carlton Morris fashioned the first opportunity with a delightful piece of skill 14 minutes in.

The striker chased a lost cause down the right flank near the byline and back-heeled into the path of Jon Taylor, who curled just wide.

But the Owls hit straight back, going one better and taking the lead on 19 minutes.

Fletcher picked up possession 15 yards from goal and before the Millers’ defence had time to close down, the Scot had drilled low and hard past ex-Owl Lewis Price.

The game evened back out until a pivotal moment three minutes before half time that ultimately helped send the points Wednesday’s way.

Rotherham skipper Danny Ward delivered a super cross into the danger zone but the advancing Morris headed tamely into the arms of Keiren Westwood from close range.

And the hosts were made to pay for that miss as the Owls doubled their lead a minute before the break.

Jack Hunt took a ball from Barry Bannan into his stride and sent a teasing cross to the back post, where Fletcher climbed high to head fiercely beyond Price.

Wednesday came out for the second half on the front foot and Fletcher almost bagged a treble but another former Owl, defender Richard Wood, prevented his side going 3-0 down with a last-ditch challenge.

The Millers responded with a mini purple patch and Wood just failed to connect on a Will Vaulks corner.

Fletcher headed into the midriff of Price from a Bannan cross at the other end but the Scottish international’s work was done and the Owls welcome Newcastle to Hillsborough on Saturday back in that coveted top six.

Wednesday: Westwood, Hunt, Loovens, Lees, Reach, Jones, Bannan, Wallace, Rhodes (Winnall 83), Hooper (Semedo 60), Fletcher (Nuhiu 73)
