Only thing missing was the win

16 August 2017

Carlos Carvalhal reflected on the 1-1 draw with Sunderland and insisted his side deserved all three points.

Wednesday came from behind to take a share of the spoils, with a David Jones hit cancelling out George Honeyland’s opener.

The Owls created chances in both halves and on another day would have the victory.

The head coach said: “I am not happy with the result but I am very happy with the performance of my players.

“We took an early goal and this happened through concentration but we should remember Sunderland are a good side and they took the advantage.

“But after this, we took control of the game and we had the chances to win. Sometimes it takes a world-class goal to make the difference and this we saw.

“We had chances after this to win, the goalkeeper made some saves and we hit the crossbar near the end.

“But I am very pleased with the response of the players, the fans were fantastic creating the environment they did and the only thing missing was the win.”

Following a disappointing opening day at Preston, the Owls have significantly upped the ante, culminating in a largely dominant display against the recently relegated Black Cats.

And Carvalhal said: “The fans had every right to show their frustrations at Preston but since then the players have responded very, very well.

“The cup performance was excellent with goals and in the second half in particular against QPR we saw the real Sheffield Wednesday.

“Tonight we played our football, we had power and energy, and we controlled most of the game.

“The signals are good and we go to the next game confident of a positive result.”
