Under-18s hit Colchester for six

27 August 2017

The Owls Under-18s made it back to back league wins on Saturday with a 6-0 victory over Colchester United at Middlewood Road.

In-from midfielder Liam Shaw continued his hot run in front of goal, bagging a hat-trick as Wednesday eased to their second win of the campaign.

The Owls hit the front after just 12 minutes when Shaw won possession on halfway before striding upfield and slotting beneath the goalkeeper.

The same man confidently stroked the ball home on the half hour mark and right on half time, Jordan Lonchar’s diving back post header put the Owls in firm control.

Still, there was time to increase the advantage before the break and Wednesday captain Alex Hunt registered the Owls’ fourth in first half stoppage time from the penalty spot.

It remained 4-0 until the 92nd minute when the lively Marcello Benedetti swivelled in the box to prod home from close range.

Then four minutes into added time, Shaw completed his treble after capitalising on a goalkeeping error, before rounding the covering defender and blasting into the net.

That’s now five goals in total for Shaw at youth level this season.

Owls: Walker, Dawodu, West, Brennan, Reaney, Gavrilov, Waldock (Hornsby 65), Shaw, Hunt, Lonchar (Benedetti 65), Borukov (Hammoud 55)
