We must do better

5 August 2017

Carlos Carvalhal said the Owls must be better next time out after their opening day defeat to Preston at Deepdale.

Daniel Johnson’s second half penalty sealed a deserved three points for the home side, who recorded their first win under new manager Alex Neil.

Carvalhal said: “Today we absolutely did not deserve to win the game.

“We did not do the things we normally do, we didn’t play enough football and there were too many long balls.

“We didn’t get to enough second balls, Preston won the majority of them.

“It is a collective result, not down to individuals, and we now will analyse together what happened and come back much better in the next game.”

Carvalhal had every sympathy with the travelling hordes from Sheffield as over 5,700 journeyed over the Pennines and had little to cheer.

Asked if he understood the fans’ frustrations, the head coach said: “Absolutely I understand. Our fans are fantastic, they follow us everywhere and we had many thousands here today.

“There was not much for them to enjoy because we did not perform anywhere near the levels that we are capable of.

“But since I have been here we have always shown a good result after a setback and I expect exactly the same this time.”
