U23 report: Crewe 5-2 Owls

4 December 2017

The Owls Under-23s had an afternoon to forget at Reasheath on Monday.

Neil Thompson’s Wednesday headed to Crewe in stunning form with four consecutive wins and unbeaten in five.

But the Railwaymen upset the odds to bag all three points against the table-topping Owls with an emphatic 5-2 victory.

Jack Stobbs gave Wednesday an early lead with just four minutes on the clock but that setback only served to spring the Alex into life.

Lewis Reilly stabbed home the leveller midway through the half and trialist Kieron Glynn swept the ball high into the net following a six-yard scramble right on half time.

Crewe seized the initiative after the break and a powerful Josh Lundstram header from a corner was adjudged to have crossed the line, despite the best efforts of Dan Wallis from point-blank range.

James Murphy provided temporary hope of a fight back when the USA man smashed home from close range but the hosts regained their two-goal cushion on 77 minutes with a flowing move forward, well finished by Charlie Kirk.

And it got worse for the Owls as the clock ticked down with the Alex striking on the counter to make it five in the 86th minute with Oliver Finney neatly clipping past Wallis.

Wednesday will be aiming for a positive response when they face Burnley on Monday at Middlewood Road (1.00pm).

Owls: Wallis, Baker, Nielsen, Williams (Shaw 63), Penney, Stobbs, Murphy (Lonchar 80), Waldock, Preston (Kirby 60), Clarke, borukov
