18s back to winning ways

11 February 2017

The Owls’ Under-18s returned to winning ways with an impressive 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Goals either side of half time from Layton Swaine and Fraser Preston put Wednesday in the driving seat and although Forest registered on the hour, it was not enough to prevent the visitors taking the points home.

Overall, the hosts were second best to an Owls side that made strides to control the game from the first whistle.

And Wednesday duly took the lead on 30 minutes when Swaine converted a Joe West corner from close range.

The same pattern continued into the second half and the Owls deservedly doubled their lead on 55 minutes as Preston showed neat skill to jink past his marker and score with a driven effort from distance.

Forest re-grouped and pulled one back on the hour but despite a frantic finish, Wednesday defended stoutly to emerge with an impressive victory.

Coach Steven Haslam said: “Credit to the boys because they played well to get into the lead and then extend it, and then defended well after Forest scored.

“We passed the ball well through the game without creating too many chances but sometimes that’s what you can do to win the points if you take the chances when they come.”
