A Keiren Westwood penalty save gave Wednesday the foundation on which to post a vital 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest.
Westwood kept out Ross McCormack in the first half and moments later Almen Abdi struck a super opener for the visitors.
Fernando Forestieiri added another goal just after the resumption to put the Owls in control and although Ben Osborn pulled one back, Wednesday stood firm to cement their play-off slot.
Both sides showed their attacking intent from the off, with Wednesday threatening just 30 seconds in when Sam Hutchinson tested debutant goalkeeper Jordan Smith from distance.
Forest responded with Jamie Ward brushing the top of the crossbar with a fierce long ranger before Jordan Rhodes was thwarted by the busy figure of Smith.
Then midway through the first half, an already entertaining affair truly burst into life.
On 27 minutes, Forest broke and had a golden chance to take the lead from the penalty spot.
Westwood brought down the advancing Ben Brereton, the referee gave the spot-kick, but Westwood superbly kept out Ross McCormack’s effort from 12 yards.
Then, just a minute later, things got even better for the Owls – and what a way to turn the contest around.
From an angled cross and headed clearance, the ball fell perfectly for Abdi to execute an unstoppable volley that positively flew past the helpless Smith.
It was exactly the boost Wednesday needed and they saw out the half in the driving seat, with Forestieiri a whisker away from doubling the lead twice inside a minute before the interval.
First his curling effort from the edge of the area whistled inches wide, then the Italian went closer still, forcing a fine save from Smith having foraged a route in on goal.
But Forestieri was not to be denied and he delved into the top drawer to make it 2-0 on 52 minutes.
Little seemed on when the striker collected a bouncing ball ten yards out with his back to goal but Forestieri swivelled and struck delightfully into the top corner, giving Smith no chance.
But Forest were far from beaten and halved the deficit on the hour. Vincent Sasso had his pocked picked trying to shepherd a long ball out of play and Osborn slotted home from the pull-back.
Forest had their tails up and Brereton went close with a flicked header as substitute Mustapha Carayol looked dangerous down the left flank.
But the Owls weathered the mini-storm to regain their stamp on proceedings and saw out the remainder of the game with ease to record their fourth successive victory.
