Carlos reviews cup defeat

8 January 2017

Carlos Carvalhal was content with the Owls’ performance, but not the scoreline, in their 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup third round at the Riverside.

Wednesday matched the Premier League side until the 58th minute when Grant Leadbitter’s free kick found the back of the net.

A minute later Daniel Ayala was sent off for the Teesiders after a late challenge on Fernando Forestieri, but as the Owls went on the offensive, the home side grabbed two more goals from Alvaro Negredo and Marten de Roon.

Carvalhal said: “I think we matched Middlesbrough in the game.

“Neither goalkeeper had much to do and we kept the ball well, it was very even.

“We didn’t get some luck and they scored the free kick for the first goal.

“We finished the game with five attackers on the pitch, which shows how we tried everything to get back into the match.

“The other two goals are just what happens in football when you go all out for the attack to try and get a goal, which is what we did.

“I don’t have anything bad to say about my players, we win as a team and we lose as team.

“They played well and matched a Premier League team in their home ground, so I can be happy with this, but obviously I am not happy with the scoreline.”

The Owls return to league action next week at home to Huddersfield.
