Fantastic return in tough circumstances

6 January 2017

Wednesday have been dealt a number of tough blows over the festive period but Carlos Carvalhal has praised the squad for coming through a difficult spell.

Despite the absence of key players and those playing through the injury barrier, the Owls have won five of their last nine, losing just one along the way.

Although the Owls have lost Kieran Lee in the long term through injury, Carlos Carvalhal says Wednesday will be with more power in attack in the future, explaining:

“The reality is that in the last nine games we have lost one, won five games and drawn three.

“In the process we haven’t had Gary Hooper, who has five goals in the team, we didn’t play with Kieran Lee at 100%, who has four goals.

“Fernando, with six goals, didn’t play in four and came directly to play in the last game so we are talking about more than 50% of our goals out from our team in this period.

“If you take out the source of 50% of goals from any team in the world, it will affect the team for sure.”

Praising the spirit of the group, he continued: “Barry Bannan played most of these games with a pain, we had to put him out for one game.

“But even with these kind of problems, we are still running, fighting and winning points.

“I think we are really doing very well in the circumstances so far.”
