Giving confidence to the team

31 January 2017

Wednesday are back on their travels this evening, facing out-of-form Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Carlos Carvalhal says his side are prepared for another difficult test on the road and believes the Robins’ recent run will have no bearing on the midweek encounter.

Having lost their previous eight league fixtures, Lee Johnson’s side have dropped dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Though Wednesday have selections issues to contend with ahead of the long trip with Sam Hutchinson and Steven Fletcher suspended.

Carlos said: “There are no easy games in this competition. When you think that there are, then you have a big problem.

“We don’t expect to play against a weak team. We know this competition has surprises all the time, it will be difficult, we must do our jobs, play compact and be solid.

“They have a good coach and good players, for sure.”

He added: “As you know Kieran Lee is out, Sam is out, Fletcher is out - all the time we have these kind of problems but it is normal to manage.”

Looking back at the Owls’ run of results, the head coach has underlined the positives and says his players will head to Ashton Gate with confidence.

After Wednesday’s narrow and frustrating defeat at Brighton last time out, 11 days ago, Carlos says his players are ready to roll up their sleeves and go again, and continued:

“I think in the last 11 games, we lose just two, we did six clean sheets so we are going honestly about our work with our small problems that we have in this moment.

“We try to give confidence to all the players and all the players that will be involved in the game will do their best of course, like we are doing all the time with honesty and hard work to win the games.”
