REPORT: Owls 0-0 Wolves
Wednesday played out a goalless draw with Wolves to post another point towards their promotion push.
But in truth it was Wanderers who had the edge through this New Year clash, spurning the better of the chances and striking the woodwork.
It was a barren afternoon in the final third for the Owls, with little in terms of creation, but despite being second best for large periods of the game, the hosts held on to take a share of the spoils.
The early pressure, however, came from Wednesday and they almost made it count nine minutes in when Vincent Sasso – making his first start of the season – headed a Barry Bannan free kick goalwards but Carl Ikeme produced a fabulous reflex save.
Sasso fashioned the next threat too, bringing a diving stop from Ikeme and the keeper denied Fernando Forestieri from the rebound.
The visitors were calm in possession, though, and made forward runs of their own – Jack Hunt thwarted the marauding Connor Ronan right at the last on the angle.
Helder Costa blasted skywards and Forestieri shot narrowly over the crossbar at the other end before the first half ended with two talking points for the Midlanders.
First, their appeals for a penalty were waved away when Matt Doherty tumbled beneath a challenge from Keiren Westwood, then Joe Mason somehow spooned over the top from five yards with the goal at his mercy.
Fortune favoured the Owls immediately after the resumption when Mason rattled the post from the edge pf the area and Reach cleared off the line from Doherty.
Wednesday responded with Forestieri spooning wide after good link-up play with Bannan and Steven Fletcher but Wolves hit back with Mason forcing a fine save from Westwood.
Both sides went in pursuit of a winner and the hosts had a handball shout in the area turned down when ex-Owl Danny Batth stopped a Lucas Joao drive but that would have been harsh on a Wolves side that deserved at the very least a point.
Wednesday: Westwood, Hunt, Sasso, Lees, Reach, Bannan, Lee (Wallace 46), Hutchinson, McManaman (Joao 52), Fletcher (Jones 76), Forestieri
