Young Owls have too much for Gillingham

7 January 2017

Wednesday’s Under-18s progressed to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup following a clinical 3-0 victory over Gillingham at Hillsborough.

Spurred on by a strong home support, Lewis Price’s goal alongside Fraser Preston’s double secured the young Owls’ safe passage to the next round.

In a first half played at a frantic pace, Gillingham threatened first through Bradley Stevenson’s free kick on ten minutes which struck the wall, and Finn O’Mara’s low shot was thwarted by Dan Wallis.
But the hosts were in cruise control with back to back goals near the half-hour mark.

On 25 minutes, Joe West’s free kick looped over the defence and Price cushioned home at the far post.

Five minutes later, Preston made it 2-0 with a powerful close range effort.

The Owls were off the blocks quickly after the restart, and in-form Preston trebled the lead by firing home a volley from ten yards.

The visitors tried to mount a comeback and keeper Wallis superbly reacted twice to deny Darren Holdaker and Stevenson.

Wednesday hit back through skipper Connor Kirby and frontman George Hirst shooting narrowly wide before safely seeing out the game with a clean sheet to boot.

Wednesday: Wallis, Brennan (Hughes 81), Cook, Lee, West, Kirby, Price (Hunt 65), Waldock (Williams 79), Lonchar, Preston, Hirst
